The Trisquel
It is a solar symbol consisting of three arms connected by a central point. The arms of this symbol represent the union of three elements , the triad , which is essential in the Celtic cosmos : earth , water and air and the number three sacred number in Celtic culture was decisive. In fact , this number appears frequently in legends and their representations as triads of gods, life cycle , consisting of birth, death and rebirth , the three tests that the warriors had to repeat to reach the next level , etc .
Normally going encompassed in an outer circle representing wholeness and renewal for Celtic and represents the evolution and balance between body, mind and spirit and is what sets it apart from the spiral of life .
The Druids used it as a sign identifying its rank to his students initiated , symbolizing the continuous learning and time : past, present and future. The Trisquel was the end to get the final symbol of high spirituality, the way that the initiates had to go to achieve full knowledge to become a druid.
It is also estimated that Trisquel was employed by the most experienced druids to heal all kinds of wounds and fevers . At least one of the many theories that different researchers , as the Trisquel , found engraved up stones of more than three thousand years ago in the Neolithic and in different cultures without any relation to each other , thereby its real meaning is unclear and what we know is thanks to the writings of the Roman scholars of Celtic culture ; since the Druidic customs were transmitted only orally from generation to generation.
According to research, the Trisquel went profusely adding weapons , shields, pots , frames , mirrors and other everyday objects considered a symbol of good luck and protective of the person who wears it in full conversion to Roman Religion . With the Christianization Trisquel was followed using as a mere ornament against the evil eye or to represent the Holy Trinity. I used to also appear in burial mounds whose function in this case was to facilitate access to the other side of the deceased .
Now ... what does the word Trisquel ? It is not clear where lies the origin of this talisman but it is known that its name comes from the Greek nominative and that could mean three wings or three legs in honor of " Trinacria " ( the Greek name for Sicily) whose symbol was a female head winding hair ( Medusa's head ) in the center surrounded by three legs and representing the three sides of the island.
Also noteworthy that in Mann Island , an island located between England , Scotland , Wales, and Ireland, including the symbol on his shield three bent legs from the knee joints and crotch emulating what looks like a Trisquel and is logical since this island is part of the six Celtic nations , along with Ireland , Cornwall , Brittany , Scotland and Wales. The researchers say that both symbols , the Sicilian and Mann Island , were in origin, references to ancient pagan cults whose Trisquel three legs representing the Sun
For the curious : The origin of the Three Legs explained in an ancient Celtic legend , which explains how the Celtic god of the waters and the sea, Manannan Mac Lyr , prevented the invasion of the island of Mann transformed into three legs filmed hill down to defeat all invaders.
