The Trisquel

It is a solar symbol comprises three arms joined by a central point. The arms of this symbol represent the union of three elements, the triad, which is essential in the Celtic cosmos: earth, water and air and whose number three, sacred number in Celtic culture, was decisive. In fact, this number appears frequently in legends and representations as their triads of gods, the cycle of life, formed by birth, death and reincarnation, the three tests that warriors had to repeat to reach the next level, etc.
Usually it is encompassed in an outer circle represents wholeness and renewal for the Celts and represents the evolution and balance between body, mind and spirit and is what differentiates it from the spiral of life.
The Druids used it as a sign identifying his rank to his students initiated, symbolizing the continuous learning and time: past, present and future. The Trisquel was in order to get the final symbol of the highest spirituality, the way that the initiates had to go to achieve the full knowledge to become druid.

It is also estimated that Trisquel was employed by the most experienced druids to cure all kinds of fevers and wounds. At least it's one of the many theories that hold different researchers, since Trisquel, found recorded up stones more than three thousand years ago in the Neolithic and in different cultures without any relation to each other, thereby its real meaning is unclear and what we know is thanks to the writings of the Roman scholars on Celtic culture; since the Druidic customs were transmitted only orally from generation to generation.

According to research, the Trisquel went adding heavily in weapons, shields, cauldrons, frames, mirrors and other everyday objects considered a symbol of good luck and protector of the person who carries it in full conversion to Roman Religion. With the Trisquel Christianization was followed using as a mere ornament against the evil eye or to represent the Holy Trinity. Used also appear in burial mounds whose role in this case, it was to facilitate access of the deceased on the other side.

Now ... What does the word Trisquel? It is not clear where lies the origin of this talisman but it is known that their nominative name comes from Greek and it could mean three wings or three legs in honor of "Trinacria" (the Greek name of Sicily) whose symbol was a female head winding hair (Medusa's head) in the center surrounded by three legs and representing the three sides of the island.

In addition it is noteworthy that on the island of Mann, an island located between England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, is included in its shield symbol three legs bent at the knee and joints in the crotch emulating what looks like a Trisquel and it is logical since this island is part of the six Celtic nations, along with Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany, Scotland and Wales. Researchers say both symbols, the Sicilian and Mann Island, were originally, references to ancient pagan cults whose Trisquel three legs representing the sun.
For the curious: The origin of the Three Legs explained in an ancient Celtic legend, which explains how the Celtic god of the waters and the sea, Manannan Mac Lyr, prevented the invasion of the island of Mann transformed into three legs rolled hill down to defeat all invaders.
